Gellan gum is one of the most extensively studied polysaccharide of natural origin, employed as multifunctional excipient in many various dosage forms. Its advantageous properties, e.g. biodegradability, non-toxicity, rapid gelation in the presence of cations, high water holding capacity or mucoadhesive potential, make it a useful component of multiple oral, ophthalmic, nasal and other formulations.
